THE PROBLEM

A stroke is a time-sensitive condition.

When a person exhibits symptoms of a stroke, recognizing them quickly and seeking emergency care can decisively change their chances of receiving timely treatment.
However, the response to a stroke does not depend exclusively on hospitals, ambulances, or specialists. It begins before a person reaches the healthcare system: it begins when an individual, a family, or a community recognizes that something is happening and decides to take action.
That is why there is an ongoing need for public education on recognizing symptoms, the importance of seeking immediate care, risk factors, prevention, timely access to the emergency system, and recovery and rehabilitation after a stroke.
An additional challenge is geographical. Chile is a geographically vast country, and healthcare and communication resources are not distributed evenly.
This initiative addresses this problem by transforming local institutions into amplifiers of a single national message.

THE PROJECT

“Ponte la Camiseta por el ACV” is a national initiative focused on education, prevention, and social mobilization that aims to help people recognize the symptoms of a stroke, understand the importance of acting quickly, and learn the key steps to prevent it.
What began as an awareness campaign around World Stroke Day has gradually evolved into a collaborative platform that brings together public and private health centers, scientific societies, health authorities, municipalities, emergency services, patient organizations, healthcare professionals, the media, businesses, and opinion leaders.
The initiative uses a common communication identity #PonteLaCamisetaACV—to transform a complex medical message into a simple, shared call to action: we can all help prevent strokes, recognize their symptoms, and act in time.
Its main strength is a decentralized model. Participating institutions receive common communication content and tools but can develop activities tailored to their own communities. In this way, a campaign originating from scientific organizations transforms into a distributed health education network.
In 2025, 74 institutions participated, including 63 public and private health centers and emergency services, with participation from both metropolitan and regional areas.
World Stroke Day was complemented by a community outreach initiative held in Puente Alto, one of Chile’s most populous municipalities. Thousands of people participated in educational activities, and 836 people underwent preventive screenings conducted by health teams.
Rather than simply holding an annual event, the project aims to build a culture in which recognizing a stroke and acting quickly becomes knowledge shared by the entire community.
